Food at Home
Sometimes I eat real food. Lol, but seriously, as much as I love dessert (I have a whole dessert blog) I love being in the kitchen, trying new restaurants, and revisiting those I enjoy.
Growing up, we didn’t eat out much. I heard the expression, “we have food in the house” often. Aside from the occasional take out; dining out was reserved for special occasions such as birthdays, graduations, Easter, and other milestones. As an adult, I find myself dining out more through travel, exploration of my city, and a way to connect with others.
Still, for me, there’s nothing more satisfying than sitting down to a good home cooked meal. Knowing that there is food at home, that I can produce incredible meals in my kitchen is such an underrated blessing. Since moving to Boston, I’ve been cooking for one. I began by learning how to make the meals I enjoyed growing up. I’ve had the grace of being able to grow as a cook without the pressure of pleasing others, and catering to dietary restrictions and preferences. There are some challenges, such as minimizing food waste (see previous post), the lack of feedback, and the absence of table conversations. I value those interactions, and look forward to catering to my own family one day. But for now, I’m enjoying trying new recipes, failing in private 😅, and perfecting tried and true dishes.
March is Women’s History Month. It’s a time where we celebrate women who have made significant impact in the world, and in our lives. This month, I recognize how much of an impact my mom and grandmother have in my life (in so may ways), but for the sake of this article I’ll keep it to the kitchen lol. Watching them make baked macaroni and cheese, collard greens, turkey wings, short ribs, candied yams, and desserts (to name a few), I was wondered why it took so long to get to my favorite part - sitting down to eat. Now I understand the work, time, and care it takes to make good food. And I am even more appreciative of the home cooked meals.
March is almost over. But, it’s always a good time to enjoy a good meal, the company of others, and to tell people in your life how much you appreciate them.
All the best,
Marissa
