Sweet Potato Season!

Hey all,

Marissa here from Yes to Dessert! Fall is in full swing. For me, like many others, fall is the beginning of peak baking season. Though, if I’m being honest, I bake and cook year round. The heat can’t keep me out the kitchen.

Sweet potato’s are one of my favorite ingredients to work with, and eat. Especially around this time of year. The most common, being sweet potato pie. In fact, you can check out my sweet potato recipe on the recipe page on this site.

In addition to pie, there are so many different ways to utilize the sweet potato this fall. Here are a few of my favorites:

  1. Sweet Potato Pie

Fun fact sweet potato is my favorite type of pie. It doesn’t require an extensive amount of ingredients, but when done correctly, is a wonderful dessert.

2. Candied Yams

It’s not a Thanksgiving meal unless there’s some yams on the table. Technically speaking, yams are the incorrect description of the dish I’m referring to in which sweet potato’s are sliced and cooked with cinnamon, sugar, butter, and vanilla. It does not use an actual yam which is bark-like brown vegetable with a white flesh. Still, candied yams or candied sweets are the terms used for this dish in my family.

3. Sweet Potato Cupcakes

It took me a couple of tries to get the recipe together for this one. And to be honest, I’m still working on it. However, I love a cupcake. Some people top their sweet potato soufflés with marshmallows. Though that’s not my preference, I like the idea of adding toasted marshmallows to this sweet potato cupcakes.

4. Sweet Potato Muffins

Similar to the sweet potato cupcakes, but with less sugar, the omission of icing, and the addition of granola. Adding granola to these muffins was a great way to add texture and depth. I believe, these would also would work well with rolled oats for a breakfast treat.

5. Sweet Potato Pancakes

These pancakes are a great way to start any day. And, since they take a little extra time to whip up, are especially nice on the weekends, slow mornings, or special occasions.

6. Sweet Potato Waffles

Can you tell this one was an experiment? Lol

It’s not the prettiest waffle ever. But, my question, are sweet potato waffles possible?  was answered with an astounding yes!

There are so many different ways you can use the sweet potato this season. In addition to the ones mentioned, there’s sweet potato soufflé, mashed sweet potato, baked sweet potato’s, and the list goes on and on.

I hope you were encouraged to try something new with this tasty and versatile ingredient. Also, I like to hear from you. What are some of your favorite ways to use the sweet potato? Do you have any recipes or tips for me? I’d love to hear them, comment below.

Stay sweet,

Marissa
