Minimizing Food Waste
Hi everyone,
Marissa here from Yes to Dessert, and I’m excited for another year of baking and dessert exploration.
One of the challenges I’ve faced since moving from NYC to Boston is minimizing food waste. Living in NYC, I had “test subjects” (or family lol) to share meals with. It took me a minute to find a balance between cooking and baking the dishes I enjoy, or wanted to try, and minimizing the amount of leftovers that are thrown out due to the lack of consumption. So, here are some of the tips I’ve learned along the way.
1. Make smaller portions.
Ok, so I know this sounds like an obvious option, but if you’re using recipes that have been passed down, or from many cook books, and online resources, the recipe can yield more portions than you actually need. Scaling down recipes, whenever possible, can ensure you don’t make more than you need.
2. Put that freezer to use.
My mom says my grandmother is the freezer queen. And now, I too find myself using my freezer for items other than ice and ice cream lol. Eating the same leftovers day after day can be uneventful. Freezing leftovers is a great way to keep food fresh for a later date. A pro tip is to freeze food in smaller portions. Freezer meals are also great to have on hand for those days you don’t feel like, or are unable to cook.
3. Share the wealth.
Whenever possible, sharing meals is a great way to minimize waste, but to also show off those skills. I love to cook, and bake, but the experience is elevated when I am able to share the meals I lovingly prepared with others. Cooking and baking for others is optimal, but when thats not an option, I have also found myself shipping cookies, brownies, and other baked goods that travel well back home. Mailing a sweet treat is a great way to show someone you’re thinking about them throughout the year.
So, there you have it. Three simple ways to minimize food waste. Still, I want to hear from you? What are some of things you do to minimize food waste?
All the best,
Marissa
