Single on Valentines Day?

Valentines Day for the Singles!

Valentines Day is swiftly approaching, and though I’ve been single on this holiday for my entire adult life (transparent moment), I love - love, and any holiday that promotes sharing chocolates is one I can certainly get onboard with. To be honest, I didn’t initially relate with the narrative of singles dreading the holiday. For me, it was like any other day, though I did enjoy receiving cards and chocolates from my parents. Getting the specialty candy on sale after the holiday became a tradition, until it was no longer fun. Two years ago, I went to pick up my discounted chocolate and was disappointed to find cleared shelves. Did everyone get a valentine this year? I felt a wave of exclusion. I longed for an experience that seemed so common though it did not happen for me, yet. I realized, those feelings were valid, but not to let a temporary experience or emotion reshape an entire experience. While I wait, I further understand the importance of having healthy coping mechanisms for navigating life’s disappointments. I haven’t always coped well, but here are some ways I enjoy Valentine’s Day single.

1.        Stay off social media! Theodore Roosevelt said, “Comparison is the thief of joy.” If there was ever a time to take a break from social media, it may be during the times you may be emotionally vulnerable.

2.        Make plans. Whether you go out with friends, family or will be staying in, having concrete plans deters you from mindless scrolling. Additionally, its rarely a bad idea to have something fun to look forward to.

3.        Enjoy a nice meal. I love to eat, and as of late have been spending a considerable amount of time in the kitchen. For me cooking is an enjoyable activity. I often find recipes online, or from cookbooks borrowed from the library.

4.        Pick up that hobby. With busy lives, our extracurriculars can get pushed to the side. This holiday weekend may serve as a good time to make time for some of the things you love.

5.        Participate in self-care. I enjoy going to the spa, long baths and getting my hair and nails done. Reading, working out, and watching movies are other ways I rejuvenate.

6.        Indulge in the sweets – guilt free. You know I had to mention something sweet. Eat those chocolates, that pint of ice cream, that salty treat. This year, I am making a mini cookie butter cheesecake.

7. Practice gratitude. This season of life you are in may not look like what you had in mind. Still, there are many things you have to be grateful for. Gratitude grounds you, and is an act of intentionality. While looking forward to the next, don’t negate life’s pleasantries in the now.

There you have it. Hope you all have a wonderful Valentines Day, may it be sweet!

XOXO,

Marissa
